About the chosen solution
AF Decom AS offers a solution where low-radioactive masses are placed in a concrete sarcophagus. The sarcophagus is located on the same plot as, and in the immediate vicinity of, the waste to be deposited.
The sarcophagus will be built with several different barriers and will have a lifespan of at least 1000 years. The location of the sarcophagus entails minimal transport and is considered to have little risk of dispersal of material after exhumation. There is no need to create an intermediate storage.
FONDO
In the period 1953-1965 AS Norsk Bergverk operated the extraction of the metal niobium and the production of ferroniob at Søve in Telemark.
In the production of ferroniob, the natural elements uranium and thorium were concentrated to an unnaturally high concentration in the slag stored at the mine site. Today, the stroke is mixed with other materials and is partially covered.
The Directorate of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA) considers that the level of activity in the area of the disused mine is so high that permanent securing of parts of the residual material must be carried out.
Søve mines are located in the municipality of Nome in Telemark. It is the county municipality that is the landowner.
