Civil Society Group

For NND, knowledge building is important. Therefore, together with NND's national civil society group and representatives of the municipalities Halden and Aremark, we have been on the expedition to share insights and experiences in the work on locating new Norwegian nuclear waste facilities. In the video you can hear more about why it is important for NND with involvement and knowledge sharing.

NND wants to inform broadly about our work and have an open and good dialogue with civil society

The work on the nuclear cleanup is going to last for decades. The NND wants a broad involvement with civil society, municipal and regional authorities, interest organisations and the local community in the planning work, during the implementation and in the localisation process for new radioactive waste storage and landfill. NND will facilitate an open dialogue with civil society, get input and advice, create collaborative forums and inform broadly.

We have regular meetings with politicians and administration in the host municipalities for the Norwegian nuclear plants, and we plan ahead to establish more local reference groups.

Since 2019, we have held regular meetings with a number of Norwegian environmental protection organizations in the National Reference Group for NGOs.

National Reference Group for NGOs

In 2019, NND formalized a collaboration with a reference group consisting of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Facts about the reference group

  • Participating NGOs are Bellona, International Women's League for Peace and Freedom, Environmental Protection League, Nature Conservation Federation, Nature and Youth, Climate Friends for Nuclear Energy and No to Nuclear Weapons
  • The agreement runs for three years — NGOs can receive support of up to NOK 100,000, - annually to cover preparations, participation and travel costs granted upon application
  • The members of the reference group are expected to provide individual advice and input
  • The members of the reference group shall pass on information to their local teams
  • The Reference Group has no decision-making authority, but has an important function as a bridge between civil society and the NND— The Reference Group and the NND have regular meetings
  • The minutes of the meetings are made public. Read the minutes.

NND has grant schemes to work with civil society

NND relies on good cooperation with civil society and municipalities considering hosting nuclear plants.

NND receives input from the organizations on relevant issues in the cleanup efforts that make us better equipped to solve the mission of cleaning up the historic nuclear waste.

It is also important for NND that decision-makers in current and possible host municipalities for nuclear plants gain increased expertise about NND and NND's mission. This forms the basis for good and knowledge-based cooperation.
