According to a recently published report by Menon Economics, the need for new storage and landfill solutions to meet the increasing amount of man-made radioactive waste is emphasized. The report has been commissioned by the Directorate of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA).

According to the report, the clean-up after nuclear activities in Halden and Kjeller will account for particularly large amounts of future radioactive waste.

It is expected that by the year 2100, the man-made radioactive waste in Norway will amount to 14,300 tons. DSA Director Per Strand said in connection with the presentation of the report that the capacity challenges are already critical and that any changes in society will affect the amount of waste.

NND is working intensively on plans to build new nuclear facilities that will handle the radioactive waste the decommissioning of the Norwegian historic nuclear facilities will create. Norway has a strict regulatory framework for handling radioactive waste and a comprehensive regulatory framework for planning and construction matters.

The report also points out that there are large variations in the characteristics of the waste that will be produced This will have an impact on further handling. There is everything from radioactive waste that contains a large amount of radioactive substances, such as spent nuclear fuel, to materials such as smoke detectors or concrete structures, which have low radioactivity.
