NND has signed cooperation agreement with the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The agreement will strengthen cooperation in radioactive waste management and decommissioning.

For NND, it is important to ensure the best possible knowledge of all parts of the mission to decommission the Norwegian historic nuclear facilities. NND therefore seeks cooperation with international partners who have the knowledge and experience that can provide the best knowledge base. This makes our processes in, for example, the handling of spent fuel, the construction of warehouses and the location of landfills for the radioactive waste even better.

The newly concluded agreement, which follows an earlier agreement from 2019, aims to leverage the expertise and technology of both organizations to meet the challenges related to nuclear waste disposal and decommissioning.

The cooperation will cover several areas, including sharing technical information, joint studies and participation in seminars and meetings.

The cooperation agreement ensures that all activities will be conducted in accordance with the respective national laws of the United Kingdom and Norway, and ensures that sensitive information is handled prudently.

“I am pleased that we can conclude such an agreement with the British,” says Pål Mikkelsen, Director of NND.

“It will give us an even better knowledge base, access to experiences that we can use in our work and then it is gratifying that we can share our knowledge with international colleagues,” Mikkelsen continues.

For detailed collaborative projects, specific agreements will be drawn up to describe technical scope, financial contributions, intellectual property rights and other important aspects.

The agreement marks a significant step forward in international cooperation on decommissioning and waste management, and reflects the ongoing commitment of both NND and NDA to protect the environment and people.
